KINGSVILLE, TEXAS Texas A&M-Kingsville Head Football Coach Bo Atterberry was notified by representatives from the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year program that he had been selected as one of the five NCAA Division II finalists on Thursday.
“It is a great honor for the entire program, said Atterberry. I really appreciate the Javelina fans, coaches and players for all they do. This is a great program put on by Liberty Mutual and I am extremely humbled to be up for an award of this caliber.”
In just his third year as Head Coach of the Javelinas, Atterberry has turned around a program that was in slow decline. After taking over as Head Coach during the summer of 2007 he has completely revamped the program. This year he led the team to the school’s 27th Lone Star Conference title and first since 2004.
Atterberry advanced to the evaluation phase of the Coach of the Year Award after being the leading vote getter in NCAA Division II with 8,800. The top fifteen vote getters advanced to the evaluation phase and now Atterberry is one of five Head Coaches moving onto the final phase.
There will be two more weeks of fan voting from December 15-29. During this times fan votes and committee voting will take place. The winners from each division will be notified on December 30.
Liberty Mutual will announce the winners at a media lunch reception with Archie Manning on January 6 in Newport Beach, California, in advance of the next day's BCS National Championship Game. The four winners and representatives from their selected charities will be celebrated at this event, showcasing the values that make this award unique. The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award provides each winning coach with $50,000 to donate to the charity or charities of his choice, as well as a $20,000 grant to donate to the school’s alumni association.
