KINGSVILLE (November 12, 2009) — Acclaimed filmmaker Robert Greenwald has pointed the camera lens at Afghanistan for the documentary Rethink Afghanistan.
He and Brave New Foundation have released the film with the goals of focusing attention on the costs, human as well as financial, of the war in Afghanistan and to generate discussion about the future of U.S. involvement there.
The Texas A&M University-Kingsville chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, along with university student groups the Pre-Law Society and Roundhouse Movie Club, are sponsoring a free public showing of Rethink Afghanistan on campus at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in rooms 219 A&B of the Memorial Student Union Building.
An organized discussion of the war in Afghanistan will follow the film, featuring a panel of professors and students moderated by Dr. Nirmal Goswami, professor of political science.
Scheduled panelists include:
- Dr. Dean Ferguson, professor, department of history
- Dr. Ryan Rhoades, assistant professor, agronomy and resource sciences
- Debra Cardona, lecturer, political science
- Political science students Brandon Barrera and Nicholas Fowler
Comments by panelists will be followed by an open discussion that will include members of the audience.
While the sponsoring organizations take no official position on the war itself or on any ideas espoused in the documentary, they do want to insure that different points of view on the war in Afghanistan are aired.
According to the sponsoring organizations, the purpose of the event is to raise the level of public interest and knowledge on what they have termed a critical matter of national concern.
