NEWS - Astronomy Open House at Texas A&M-Kingsville Offers Free Presentation “The Star of Bethlehem,” Viewing Nov. 19

November 16, 2009

KINGSVILLE (November 12, 2009) — What was the star that led the Magi to the Christ child shortly after the first Christmas? When did it occur? What are possible scientific explanations?

These questions will be addressed in the special astronomy presentation and open house “The Star of Bethlehem” Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in Hill Hall, room 119.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

Dr. Lionel D. Hewett, professor and interim chair of the physics department at A&M-Kingsville, presents computer simulations to suggest what the Magi saw in the sky some 2,000 years ago that motivated them to travel hundreds of miles across the desert.

After the lecture, weather permitting, the university’s 16 inch telescope will be used to view Jupiter and other heavenly objects.

Hill Hall is the aluminum-domed building adjacent to the parking lot. Parking is available behind the Memorial Student Union Building, on the corner of Santa Gertrudis Avenue and University Boulevard.
