Bands in Free Concert Nov. 19
KINGSVILLE (November 12, 2009) — The Texas A&M University-Kingsville Wind Symphony and Concert Band will present their second concert of the 2009-2010 season on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. in Jones Auditorium, on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The bands will perform some of the best new and classic works in the wind repertoire. The Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Jason Kihle, assistant band director and assistant professor of percussion, will perform the following:
- Vesuvius by Frank Ticheli, inspired by the Italian volcano that buried Pompeii in 79 A.D.;
- British composer Kenneth Alford’s classic march Army of the Nile;
- Serenade No. 1 by one of the godfathers of American band music, Vincent Persichetti;
- Shortcut Home by Dana Wilson.
The Wind Symphony, under the direction of Brian Shelton, presents a program entitled Marches and Variations. It features music of European composers, two marches and two theme and variation settings.
Athletic Festival March by Russian Sergei Prokofiev and Marsch by Luxembourg composer Marcel Wengler are both unorthodox and offer an entertaining alternative to conventional American marches.
The two variations are equally contrasting. Variations for Wind Band by Ralph Vaughan Williams is a traditional setting based on an original theme. Extreme Make-Over by Dutch composer Johan De Meij is a modern interpretation of a theme by Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky.
Two of the works on the concert – Extreme Make-Over and Marsch – are being prepared for the Wind Symphony’s performance at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference in San Antonio in February 2010.
